Kuan Yin - the Goddess of Unconditional Love, Mercy, and Forgiveness. A very befitting name for a small wooden retreat which only sells heavenly vegetarian food.
Ironically, right above Kuan-Yin Tea House is The Candy Club.
As you walk through the modest cane hut entrance, you become transported to a wonderful and relaxing retreat surrounded by simple bamboo decor and chaste white lanterns.
The vegetarian selection is quite extensive - ranging from dumplings, faux meats, mock seafood, and various entrees. For our entrees, we had Boiled Dumplings ($6.9) and Zi Zhu Jun ($6.9). The dumpling skin was surprisingly thin and filled with diced cabbage, carrots, vegan meat, and tofu but it was quite dry and flavourless. In contrast, the Zi Zhu Jun was irresistably addictive with its deliciously marinated carrots and shitake mushrooms encased in thin and crispy seaweed. To top it off, the Zi Zhu Jun was glazed with an exciting Worcestershire oyster like sauce that came with a hint of Japanese pickled gingery sweetness.
The Faux Fish, Chicken, and Pork that came with my Vegetarian 3 Combo Rice ($10.9) was equally exquisite. Suprisingly, the soy-protein imitates tastes just like the real meats and even had muscle fibres! Drizzled with a heavenly savoury yet slightly sweet sauce, it was quite enjoyable.
Unfortuately, all good things must come to an end. This delightful haven of mock meats will be closed from 31 January 2015 onwards. Luckily, you may still be able to get it personally delivered after that date. At least I can anyway :P.
Verdict:
Are you sure this is vegetarian? It's too addictive to be vegetarian :D.
