Ichiban Yakitori - Gresham Lane | 1/88 Creek Street Brisbane QLD 4000

Hidden in a quiet alleyway (Gresham Lane), this tiny little wooden stall is easy to miss. Don't be fooled by its ramshackle appearance though, as it sells one of the best yakitori (skewers) and Momofuku inspired steamed buns (which Ichiban Yakitori calls slider buns) in Brisbane. In addition to this, Ichiban Yakitori offers a range of japanese food including curry, udon, and gyoza (dumplings).

As an entree, I ordered the Roast Duck Slider Bun ($5). The Bun came in a cute container, which makes it convenient for those of us who have limited time on our hands and just want takeaway.

The Bun was simply divine - the combination of roast duck, fresh shallots and coriander, crisp cumcumbers, and generous dollops of sweet hoisin sauce housed in the perfect steamed bun was so simple, yet so satisfying. Even the steamed bun, by itself, was extremely addictive as it was ridiculously light and soft.

I also ordered the Yakitori special ($8.5), which came with three skewers - chicken, chicken and capsicum, and chicken meatball. The skewers were incredibly tasty - perfectly grilled and glazed with sweet teriyaki sauce. Out of the three, the chicken meatball skewer was the most memorable - despite being rich and meaty, it was also tender yet slightly bouncy. Ichiban Yakitori nailed both the taste and texture - the chicken meatballs were moist and delicate but at the same time bursting with flavour. The accompanying japanese rice and asian slaw was also very tasty and came with ample mayonaise and sweet soysauce.

Verdict:
Great value for money, and definitely worth a visit, or probably several. My only complaint is that it's not open on the weekends :(
