Ho Lin Wah - Shop 5 | 647 Beenleigh Road Sunnybank Hills QLD 4109

One of Brisbane's only HK style cafe furnished with traditional 70s decor - each window portrays a different aspect of HK in the 70s. Bird cages are also a prominent feature - back in the 70s, birds used to be very popular and the well-off would take them out on "walks" to show them off.

Instead of the limited range of snacks generally available, Ho Lin Wah offers a diverse menu ranging from western, chinese, snacks, and congee, making it suitable for everyone. There are so many options available that their menu can't fit onto 1 page.

What is most amazing about HK style cafes is that you get a 2 course meal with drinks for only $10.50. The set meals change daily which allows you to try out different signature dishes.

For a measly $11.50, I got a soup, Creamy Chicken Rice, and a lemon iced tea (+$1 for cold drinks). The soup of the day was a clear soup which was flavourful and infused with chinese almonds. The Creamy Chicken Rice was very creamy but at the same time, overly buttery, which overwhelmed the subtle flavours of the chicken. The lemon iced tea was sweetened perfectly and had a strong lemon taste which made it quite enjoyable, but I would have appreciated it more if it was served cold (not luke warm) and had a generous slice of lemon rather than a sad looking half slice.

My fellow Food Extinguisher ordered a Hk style milk tea ($3.8), and you really won't be able to get better milk tea anywhere close by unless you fly to HK. The seamless combination of rich brewed tea with velvety condensed milk is guaranteed to hit you with a wave of nostalgia.

The Seafood Combination Chow Mein ($13.5) was perfectly crispy and topped with generous servings of seafood, which made me salivate just thinking about it. I would have enjoyed it more if it had more sauce, but that's just a personal preference.

Verdict:
For just $11.50 a meal, I really can't complain. Best $11.50 I have ever spent.
